This is a private reference site, not a government office. It cannot verify custody, authorize a release, post bond, or obtain an official booking record. For any of those actions or an official answer, contact the appropriate public office below.
Official Sussex Record Contacts
Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and Records/FOIA:
20212 Thornton Square, Sussex, VA 23884
Mail: P.O. Box 1326, Sussex, VA 23884
Main and records line: 434-246-5000
FOIA fax: 434-246-5014
Jessica Kessinger is the published FOIA contact. Public reports are available from Nannett Cabrinha Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; call ahead before an in-person visit.
Sussex County Jail:
20212 Thornton Square, Sussex, VA 23884
Jail line: 434-246-5361
The Sheriff’s Office operates the jail. Research found no official public online custody roster, booking feed, or booking-photo gallery, so a call or a specific records request is the official local starting point.
Sussex Combined Courts:
15098 Courthouse Road, Sussex, VA 23884
Telephone: 434-246-1096
Use the court and clerk route to verify what happened after an arrest. A court result is not a warrant-clearance service.
Sussex Circuit Clerk:
15088 Courthouse Road, Sussex, VA 23884
Telephone: 434-246-1017
The Circuit Clerk is the local route for felony criminal matters and misdemeanor appeals.
Virginia Department of Corrections:
VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator serves a different custody population from a new Sussex County jail booking. For VADOC FOIA guidance, use FOIA@vadoc.virginia.gov or 804-963-2953.
Use these routes according to the question you have:
- For an adult booking record or initial-intake photo, begin with the Sheriff’s Records/FOIA contact and describe the existing record, name, and approximate date. Virginia’s request process is governed in part by Va. Code § 2.2-3704.
- For current Sussex County Jail routing, contact the jail directly. The office has not published an official public roster or recent-bookings page.
- For a court disposition after an arrest, use the Combined Courts or Circuit Clerk contact that matches the case stage. A booking charge is an allegation, not a conviction.
- For a state-prison or supervision question, use the VADOC locator and its separate records process, not the county jail route.
- For federal Bureau of Prisons or ICE custody, use the applicable official federal locator only when that custody system is relevant.
- For an overview of the local records path, see the home page; for warrant-related routing, see Most Wanted Fugitives.
